Riebeck quarter
Location
The Riebeck quarter [Riebeckviertel] is close to the centre and south of the Riebeck Square [Riebeckplatz], East and West of the Merseburger Strasse and also close to the main railway station. It is connected to the B 6 and the B 91. The Leipzig/Halle intercontinental airport is 16 km (10 miles) away. The location is particularly suitable for low-impact industry, craft-related companies and the service sector.
Revitalisation
The approx. 90 hectare [222 acre] area has numerous old industrial locations close to the centre of the city mingled with living quarters. It is one of the most important development areas in the city of Halle. The land and buildings of the former Halle "Venag" coffee roasting plant and the former Halle sugar refinery "Ostzucker" with its typically spacious open areas and listed industrial architecture have been acquired by the city of Halle. The object is both to sell and let parts of this and existing buildings to interested commercial operations.
Investors are invited for the remaining free spaces and buildings by both "Venag" and "Ostzucker", for them to implement their own strategies in close cooperation with the city of Halle. This has already enabled the "Zur Rose" mail order pharmacy to be established here in 2004, which will create up to 400 jobs in the next few years. DELL will open up a service and distribution centre here with 700 staff in the autumn of 2006. Up to 1,500 staff are expected to be employed in Halle.
Local craftsmen’s centre
To support commercial development an area has been set aside by our arrangement with the local craftsmen’s centre especially for craftsmen and innovative operations from the service sector, industry and niche industries. A total of 4,500 m² has been made available, adapted to individual needs.
